This seminar, taught by world-renowned mixologist
Robert Hess, will provide an overview of the cocktail
its history, and the ingredients that go into it.”

Don’t miss the opportunity to train with an expert!

In addition to Robert’s class there are several local venues that offer cocktail classes on a regular basis. I’ve taken two at Kathy Casey Studios and would highly recommend them. They are normally taught by Kathy and Ryan Margarian, a noted mixologist. Nothing is currently on the schedule but I would expect to see an update soon and you can sign up for their newsletter to be notified. These two are known for their highly inventive cocktails, often featuring herbs and other unexpected ingredients

Space City Mixer offers classes once or twice a quarter. They are held at Atlas Foods in U-Village and always sell out. They just had a class a few days ago so another should be scheduled in the next month or two.

The local community colleges generally offer a few courses each quarter through their continuing education programs. These run the gamut from a one day wine basics to a professional bartending series, including a licensing class. As an example check out North Seattle’s offerings.

Licensing class? Tending bar in Washington State requires a license? Really?

At any rate, I’d love to go to Robert’s class/ seminar/ thingy but can’t afford it this month. Keep us posted with notices about other classes taught by The Spirit World staff, please?

Not only bartending but also serving alcohol requires a permit. I actually think that most states require it. I seem to remember needing one in my younger years when I bartended and cocktailed in Oregon.

Here’s an official summary:

The 1995 Legislature passed a law requiring Mandatory Alcohol Server Training (MAST) for managers, bartenders and anyone who serves alcohol on-premises. Permits are issued upon successful completion of a private, certified alcohol server training program. There are two types of permits, Class 12-Mixologist Permit and Class 13-Servers Permit.

*nod*  I’ve heard of permits required by a business to serve alcohol. I didn’t know that individuals had to have something similar in Washington. I love that they call it a Mixologist Permit though. That’s too cute!
