“Drinks”
Just after the holidays I picked up a new mixology book that caught my eye as I was browsing through stacks of books. The book, is “Drinks” by Vincent Gasnier.
First, it’s a large format book which I find attractive - I like when I can leave a cookbook laying around as if it were part of the decor! The photos are bright and enticing and most of the book is reference and information - not just recipes, although there are a good selection of recipes to accompany everything you learn by reading the earlier sections.
The reference sections cover all the major spirits varieties and there is an “other” chapter, as well. Within each chapter the opening pages provide an introduction to the spirit then there are sections for each country that produces the spirit. Finally, brands are discussed in detail within the context of the country. In addition to spirits there are chapters on wines and beers. It’s pretty comprehensive coverage of the world of alcohol. Throughout the book you’ll find information on tools and techniques.
If you are primarily interested in cocktail recipes this probably isn’t the book for you. While there are lots of recipes the book has primarily a reference and educational slant. I find that interesting but I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea! And it’s a beautiful book, but at $50 there are certainly more economical way to pick up a few mixed drink recipes - subscribing to this site would be one!
