Sharp Shooters


Sharp Shooters 2I picked this little specialty book up while browsing through the Barnes and Noble bargain books tables. The bright and cheery cover caught my eye and further inspection revealed great photography and many brightly colored, layered drinks.

Many of the drink names are entertaining: Pecker Wrecker; Bird Dropping - describing the look of the shooter; and Gorilla Snot, to name a few.

“Sharp Shooters” by David Biggs is a very focused book. Every beverage can be made in a shot glass, most are layered and many recipes include a comment to provide some context for the experience: “Very refreshing” for the Bloody Good Shot, a shooter version of the Bloody Mary; “Halleluiah! (sic) This should raise your spirits!” for the Heaven and Hell, a black and clear concoction.

A chapter on the history of shooters provides some background on how the trend got started. Another chapter provides information and tips on how to get beautiful layers based on the specific gravity of each component. There are chapters on tools and ingredients and one that provides some drinking games. The bulk of the book, however, is recipes with accompanying photos.

Even if you think you are not into shooters, you may want to take a look at this book. There are several little sippers that might provide a nice treat as a dessert or just a pre-dinner sip. The Butterball, for instance, is made of Irish Cream, cold coffee and Butterscotch Schnapps.

Besides the version I purchased, I see there is a UK version available. The description looks very similar and I’m guessing there are few, if any, differences.

awesome find! I love any mixology or cookbook that helps people understand specific gravity! How better to do that than to mix your own drinks and watch the liquors set up into pretty layers (like the pics above).

Maybe I will do something like this with non-alcoholic liquids with my daughter for homeschooling .. hhmmm.
