Around the Beer World - Greece
I love Greek food, but I have yet to find a brewpub that serves food from the place that inspired Homer’s epics. As you know, I also love drinking beer, especially with a good meal. So what does a beer lover drink when they go to Greek restaurant? Well, that all depends on what is available at your particular restaurant, but if you are at a quality Greek establishment they’ll have at least four or five different Greek beers for you to choose from. Two of my favorites are Marathon and Athenian from Athenian Brewery in Athens, Greece.
Marathon is an amber colored lager with a plenty of taste. This is not a timid beer doing its best impression of corn water. You can actually taste the malt and the hops in this beer. (Tom Ciccateri has reviewed Marathon for Realbeer.com). Athenian is similar, but a little lighter in color. You should get some pleasant floral notes from this beer.
Other beers to keep an eye out for are Mythos Hellenic Lager Beer, Hellas Pils, Hillas, Vergina Lager, Alfa Hellenic Beer, and Keo Premium Beer (brewed in Cyprus). Short reviews of some of these beers can be found at MediterraneanWines.com.
