Oscar Party!

Raindrop Martini

My suggestion for this week’s Happy Hour at Home is to take a page from Sunday’s Oscar festivities and do one of three things: plan a happy hour based on what you think Hollywood might be drinking that night; make a plan based on one of the nominated movies; or make it an “at the movies” night.

If you want to party like Hollywood, Champagne will be in order, and perhaps caviar and blini or smoked salmon.

If you make it an “at the movies” night, think about what you typically have while at the movies: popcorn and a coke. Add a cocktail twist to it by making a big batch of popcorn (flavoring it, if you wish) and serve the traditional Rum and Cokes or Cuba Libras.

If you do a movie themed party you might, for instance, base your party on Good Night, and Good Luck. In that case you could simply serve Scotch along with your popcorn. Or perhaps you choose to base your party on Capote. In that case I’d probably serve Martinis. For a twist on this classic drink check out the following recipe, which goes by a variety of names. The one pictured above is a version I had last Friday and it was called the Rainwater Martini.

Rainwater Martini

2 oz Gin (in this case, Bombay Sapphire)
2 oz Vodka
A couple drops of dry vermouth

Place all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake until well chilled (or stir if you prefer) and strain into a chilled martini glass.
