Smithwick's is one of the Irish Reds I was going to highlight. In the last year it's become ubiquitous (at least on Long Island).

Just yesterday I found Smithwick's Irish Red on tap at a place in the U-District here in Seattle, so I jumped at the chance to order it.

I'm really glad I did. It was lightly sweet with a very clean finish. I enjoyed it a lot, and will keep my eyes peeled for other Irish Reds.

Oh yeah, Irish Reds are excellent. More malty, less hoppy. On Thursday, I went into Manhattan to try the Kelly's Red at the Heartland Brewery on 34th St. and 5th Ave. (near the Empire State Building). It was nicely done and served nitrogenated like Guinness so it was creamy like a milk shake.

I don't think I've ever had a real Irish Red Ale - I'll have to look for one. It sounds like something I'd really like.
