Take a Trip to Bolivia

Bolivia is one of two landlocked countries in South America. On the east it is bordered by the great land of Brazil and on the west by the Andes Mountains of Peru and Chili. About half of the population lives on the Altiplano, a great plateau on the east. This is the home of La Paz, the capital and Lake Titicaca, one of those geographic locations we all learned about in grade school as the highest lake in the world, although technically it is the highest commercially navigable body of water in the world.

While beer is a common beverage in Bolivia their national spirit is singani. Singani is a distilled spirit made from muscatel grapes. It is named after the town where it was first perfected in the mid-1500s. It is distilled multiple times in copper until reaching 71% alcohol. It is the base ingredient of a common Bolivian cocktail, the Chufaly and is also found in the Yungueño. Singani is also produced in northwest Argentina.

Like grappa, this is a spirit that make take a bit of gettng used to - even local establishments call the Chufaly, lethal!
