Two Tales of One Beer

A few weeks ago one of the Digital Mavens (DM) sent me an email, “Are you or someone on the blog interested in reviewing a soon to be released beer, if it gets shipped to you?” (I’m using quotes v-e-r-y loosely, in fact I’m using them incorrectly as this is complete paraphrasing…)

“Sure!”, I said, thinking, “This is great! I’ll have it shipped to Donavan, he can do a review and he gets a free bottle of beer - this is good!” So the DM did a quick email intro. The marketing guy then asked, “And where would you like your bottle of Heineken Premium Light shipped?”

Uh, oh. Light. At that point I thought this might not be such a good idea to have it shipped to Donavan. I mean Donavan makes his own beer, as well as enjoys the vast array of micros, Belgians and beers I don’t even know how to classify. So when I finally responded to the guy (”real” work was a little intense there for a couple weeks) I had him ship it to me, thinking I might be more of the target market.

My bottle showed up a few hours before I was taking off to see my family in Oregon over Easter weekend. So I tabled my tasting until this week. On my drive to Oregon I had some time to think (4 hours each way) and I thought maybe what would be best is if Donavan and I both tasted this beer. Not a He Said, She Said thing (although we do have one of each…) but a Beer Aficionado, Beer Mainstreamer sort of thing.

Donavan, being the great guy he is, agreed - even though I’d already swiped the free bottle and he had to go buy his own. So what follows this post are our two impressions of this new product, Heineken Premium Light.

We’ll start with Donavan, since he is much more knowledgeable and you’ll probably learn a bunch of stuff by reading his post. Then we’ll follow with my review. You might still learn something there, too. At least you’ll learn what an “average” beer drinker thinks and maybe some other non-beer stuff, too!

Brenda and Donavan - Thanks for this. It’s really fun to read a comparative review of the same beer. While I probably wouldn’t seek this one out, if offered it at a party, I would accept rather than having a mixed drink.

Thanks for the feedback, Larry!
