Mother’s Day Cocktail: “O” Fizz

Last May, Oprah’s magazine, O, celebrated it’s 5th anniversary. In the July 2005 issue the published the cocktail that was created for their celebration.

This cocktail would serve a variety of needs but with it’s light pink color, it would be especially fitting for a Mother’s Day Brunch.

O Fizz

Makes 4 cocktails

  • 3 tsp sugar (or simple syrup)
  • 12 sprigs fresh mint, plus extra for garnish
  • 3 oz fresh lime juice
  • 8 oz vodka
  • Cranberry juice
  • Champagne or sparkling wine
  • Fresh raspberries for garnish

For each fizz, add 3/4 tsp sugar, 3 sprigs of mint, and 3/4 oz fresh lime juice to a shaker. Muddle contents; add ice to shaker, along with 2 oz of vodka and a splash of cranberry juice. Shake vigorously, then strain into chilled flute. Top the glass with Champagne; garnish with a few fresh raspberries and a sprig of mint.

A fizzy cranberry-mojito? It sounds interesting. What does it taste like?

Okay, at the risk of scaring everyone I will tell you… It tastes sort of like minty champagne. Now, if I heard this description I would run! :-)

As those two things together are not really something that appeals to my inner tastebud. But it really works in this cocktail! The cranberry is more for color than flavor - next time I would probably try a splash of Chambord instead of cranberry. Because vodka is basically neutral you don’t really taste it, but it does add a bit of a wallop. So what you are left with is minty champagne with a bit of a sweet lime back. It’s really quite refreshing, even it it does pack a punch!

That doesn’t sound so bad. So it really is something like a fizzy cranberry-mojito… and I lurves me a mojito.  ^_^

Yeah, but rum has much more of an influence in a mojito - maybe you can think of this as a mojito light. :-)
