I was there. It was oversold. I got no food. It was hot. There were great beers, everyone unlucky to get in was smiling and really gettin into the beer. The frat crowd drank Becks the beer people drank Southhampton, 6 points, Stone and nobady looked mad. LOng Islanders don't riot or fight! they just had a good time even if it was an hour short. ( Probably good given the conditions.

Hank- Sorry to disappoint you, but going to NYC beer festivals isn't going to help you stay away from the Starfish's tentacles. Calimano was behind at least two of the Brewtopia beer festivals staged in NYC.

Hank- Thanks for the name of the "organizer". I mentioned this incident to a friend of mine with a lot of experience of festivals and his guess was that there was probably some else in the equation that was taking Shoreline Beverage for a ride. I'll see what I can track down.

I went to that festival. Its sad that it was co-organized by that beer store and Andy Calimano of Starfish Junction productions. Andy is a sleezebag who will always try to make the most money and give you the least for it. That festival sucked and from now on I am only going to NYC beer festivals.

Hi Brenda,

Yes, this was the "Wine Rave" at Bearfoot/Bills. For dinner, I generally prefer BB in the last 5 years or so... Araxi used to be my favorite up there, but they changed management a few years back and I had several marginal experiences there.
I can't tell you how glad I am to hear that it isn't just beer festivals that have such difficulties. There's an interesting conversation over at "Brewer Confessions" about beer festivals. Here's the link:
Lara:
Were you at the Bearfoot Bistro "after party" or one of the Crush events? We had problems with Bearfoot Bistro 3 years ago and haven't been back - the event at Araxi is much more civilized - of course that may not be what you were looking for! :-)
Something like this happened to my husband and I at last year's Cornocopia Wine festival in Whistler, BC. When we arrived, tickets in hand, we weren't allowed to go in due to fire marshal regulations. They did a poor job of handling the many of us who had paid $200 per ticket. After about an hour wait in the cold, we were allowed in, but much of the event was over by then. It was still fun, but a simple customer service agent giving an apology and letting people know what to do would have made a huge difference in our overall attitude and would have stopped many customers from walking away mad.

I did manage to get some numbers. Based on what I was told about the number of people at the event (something like 2000) and the number of people with tickets who were turned away (something like 1000) and the fire marshall's limit on the number of people allowed into the Huntington Hilton's Grand Ballroom (something like 1000), I have to conclude that the organizer accidentally sold 2000 more tickets than they should have. And I'm still waiting for that refund. Oh well.
