Borovička

Some time ago, Drinks around the World covered the topic of Slivovitz, a plum brandy popular in several Eastern European countries. Known by various names in various places (Slivovica, Slivovitz, Slivovice…) it is not the only indigenous liquor in the area.

Borovička a juniper brandy, similar to gin, is a national drink in Slovakia. Some say it is the most often consumed distilled beverage in that nation. There are many assertions about the properties of this liquor, for instance: according to popular tradition a glass of borovička drunk half an hour before eating is considerable aid to the digestion; when you drink pure borovička you have the smallest hangover you can imagine; and Slovaks claim it can ward off a cold.

No matter what the claim, it is generally drunk on its own, with a splash of water or tonic, or perhaps with beer. Mostly anyway. Apparently those crazy Slovaks like to mix it up a bit at some of their local festivals. According to this report, Borovička played a crucial role in a sword throwing competition:

“Competitors also competed in a sword toss that consisted of three parts - drinking a 1-decilitre mixture of hot rum, borovička (juniper berry liquor), ketchup, and black pepper. Then competitors had to turn around three times and after that throw the 4.5-kilogram sword.”

I don’t think I’d want to be anywhere near that competition!

I’ve had the enjoyment of much borovicka when I visited relatives in Slovakia. I can attest that it kept me healthy. I can also attest to it not leaving much a hangover after a night (or day) of consumption. Some homemade versions can be rather difficult to swallow, though. It is like gin, but is not dry. It has a very full feel in the mouth, a very complete flavor. I suggest it to anyone. I just wish I could find it stateside. Anyone that knows how to get it in the states or send it to the states, please email me. Na Zdravie!

Thanks for the sharing the benefit of your first-hand experience, Brad!

I to am trying to find borovička in the United states would love any information and prefer old herold.

Hi Steve: As fas as I can tell it’s not sold here in Washington and a quick web search did not show any promising leads. You may just want to contact the Old Herold (http://www.oldherold.sk/verbal/Contact/) to see if they have a distributor in the US.

Good Luck!
Brenda

Any idea where to find Borovicka in the US? It isn’t banned is it?

David:
I haven’t looked for it since my search in January but I imagine it’s still hard, if not impossible to find here in the US.
