Bal Mar

Cocktails at Bal Mar

Several days ago the Cocktail Club got together for our June meeting. Our location was, Bal Mar, Ballard’s hip yet cozy cocktail lounge.

The day of the meeting had been a rough one for me so I arrived in a rather grumpy mood. RH, JB and EM did there best to both ignore it and bring me out of it. Although I eventually recovered I was just too grumpy to take notes - although I did take lots of photos! That seemed to be within my coping zone at the time. I can tell you that I had a Tahitian Holiday which was quite beautiful as well as tasty! Made with vanilla rum, it’s a bit fruity but brought back to balance with a hint of mint. My second drink was a Guilty Conscience, made with cucumber, which is popping up in lots of drinks around town and I say it makes a perfect light summer cocktail! And RH ordered a Bijou that night and you can see it here.

Bal Mar has been open for about 9 months now and seems to have settled in to a decent rhythm. The bartenders are always friendly and most are interested in learning and perfecting their craft. The house cocktails are interesting and well-balanced. I’m still not sure they have their food priced right but so far, I seem to be the only one complaining.

If you want to get away from downtown for a change, it’s a good choice in the ever changing Ballard area.
