Nika, you're crazy! You did all that to make an ice straw with two kids and another on the way? I'm impressed!

Jen, glad you like it! This is how I did it (not saying its the only way :-) Get some PVC pipe cut to 1 foot lengths. clean the pipe (rinse lots) Get a plastic cup, put the pipe in (I did three in case it wasnt a perfect process, its not!), fill with water so that about an inch of the pipe is covered at the bottom. Freeze. This forms your plug. Once frozen get all the excess ice off the outside of the pipes and then pour in very cold water to fill. Freeze. Rinse the outside of the PVC pipe with hot water and then using a skewer push the ice stick out, carefully! Do this at the time you need the stick cuz it will stick to anything you put it down onto in the freezer or it will melt before you can use it.

Ice straw? Sweet!
Actually, from the image I thought it was a stirrer. I have some nice glass rod stirrers, but they do tend to poke one in the eye if not careful, plus you have to wash them later. Ice ones seem like a brilliant idea. How did you make it?

MrBaliHai: choice is relative :-) I can chose to go to the one that is 40 minutes away or the one that is 1.5 hours away :-) I live out in the middle of nowhere.

Jack: Yeah Iused POM, worked like a dream. Mango-pom sounds amazing.

You all are just a font of knowledge on fruitiness! :-)

I'm a bit skeptical of premium grenadines like Vic's and Williams-Sonoma; homemade is fun to make, plus it has wonderful color, texture and taste. I can't find a reason to shell out big bucks for a prefab.

I use POM for regular grenadine, but recently I've also been experimenting with Odwalla's new line of pomegranate juices - make the syrup with their mango/pomegranate juice, add a bit to some tonic water, and top with a drop or two of Angostura. It's fantastic.

You have more than one Vic's to choose from? Must be nice...:-)

I'd recommend picking up a bottle of their passionfruit syrup too.

B, thanks :-) That straw was a pain inthe behind to make. Made three of them, only one came out. The blueberry ice cubes were super easy :-)

Trader Vic's grenadine also contains real pomegranate juice, and it's available via mail order if you can't find it locally.
