Gold Rush Cocktails

Fall has arrived and that means a few things: the temperatures start dropping; the trees start turning color; and the new interactive online games are launched. Okay, maybe that last one isn’t something you immediately think of when you think of fall but it’s happening this year. AOL has a new online game called “Gold Rush“. I didn’t spend a lot of time checking it out but there’s an online element and there are some sort of events in certain cities. And the goal is to get rich. Okay, that wasn’t too informative but let me get to the real point.

For some reason, they have commissioned new cocktails for this game. I guess so you can drink while playing? I don’t know. They brought in some notables to create the drinks, so they should be decent recipes. The creators include Leo DeGroff, son of Dale DeGroff (otherwise known as the King of Cocktails); and Aisha Sharpe and Will Shine, winners of the 2006 American Cocktail Awards. But I have to tell you the whole thing seems a little bizarre to me.

Gold Rush Mint

Mixologist: Leo DeGroff

  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice
  • 1 1/4 ounces simple syrup
  • 3 juicy orange slices
  • 6-8 mint leaves
  • 1 1/2 oz Maker’s Mark Bourbon whiskey

In pint glass, muddle the lemon juice, simple syrup, orange slices, and mint leaves together. Add liquor and shake with ice. Strain over new ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and orange slice.

For all the recipes and an interview with Leo see the AOL article.
