Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest celebrations around the world are off and running with several having already been completed. The original celebration in Munich, Germany started on September 16th and continues through October 3rd. You can read all kinds of interesting facts about this celebration in the Wikipedia.

You are most likely to find celebrations in areas where German immigrants settled. I’ve always celebrated this fest as I grew up near one of the major celebrations held in the little town of Mt. Angel, Oregon. Their celebration was last weekend as was the Cincinnati celebration which claims to be the largest and most authentic in the US.

Here in the Seattle area the Fremont Oktoberfest kicked off last night and continues through Sunday. This site lists Oktoberfests in Canada and the US. The Wikipedia post lists several others around the world. Check it out to see if you can participate in one in your area!

IMHO…you’ve gotta go to the upper midwest for Oktoberfest, and LaCrosse Wisconsin has one of the finest celebrations around.

Hi Brian! I think the key to a good Oktoberfest is really where ever there is a good German community and I believe the areas you mention qualify. The German half of my family is from Peoria, IL and it seems that entire area attracted a lot of immigrants.

But don’t write off little places like Mt. Angel! I’m not sure why, but it also had a huge (former) German immigrant population - that’s who settled and created the town. The population is now at about 4000 and Oktoberfest is their moment of glory and they do a really great job! Over 300,000 people attend the annual 4-day festival!

The Fremont Oktoberfest, on the other hand, is really just a beerfest that happens to take place at this time of year. As much as I enjoy it, there’s no Bavarian element to it at all.
