Kirkland Vodka

Now I live in a state that heavily controls hard liquor sales - everything other than beer and wine, so I won’t have first hand knowledge of this report and I’ll be relying on those of you in more lenient states to add any comments or information you might have.

Having said that, it looks like Costco is getting into the spirits industry! I’m guessing that in some states they already sell name-brand liquor in their warehouses but now they have their own label! In an article in the most recent Costco Connection titled “The Water of Life”, they are introducing their latest offering in the Kirkland Signature line of products, a vodka. Made in Cognac, France with wheat from northern France, this new spirit is described as having hints of citrus and vanilla.

Now I have no reason to doubt this article or the quality of the vodka. In fact, perhaps just the opposite. I often purchase things like Kirkland brand olive oil and balsamic vinegar and have been very happy with it. In an article he wrote a couple years ago Greg Atkinson, a local and highly respected chef, talks about the Kirkland products and why he likes them. So all past experience would lead me to believe this is going to be a quality product.

And, although they don’t list the exact price - I imagine it may vary a bit in different areas - they do say it is less than $30 for a 1.75 liter bottle. At that price it would certainly be worth checking out! If you live in a state where hard liquor sales are permitted at your local Costco warehouse please check it out and let us know what you think!

Hurray! Hopefully this signals that Costco is going to ramp up the volume on their attempt to open up the liquor industry. Here in WA, with our state-owned liquor monopoly product availability can be extremely problematic. At the moment, Plymouth gin is virtually out-of-stock throughout the entire state. With the folks at the liquor stores just shrugging their shoulders and saying “we just sell what they send us.”

They were pretty successful with the wine so my guess is they have some influence in the spirits area, too.

In fact, speaking of wine, they are now also labeling their own wines. I picked up a bottle of Bordeaux Pauillac but have yet to give it a try. More on that later…

The Kirkland brand vodka is nice. It’s packaged in a beautiful, but very tall, bottle. The vodka itself is very nice, with a fine and sweet scent. This product is definately worth the price.

Thanks, Jeff! Now if we could only get it here in Washington…

Have just stocked up on this vodka here in Florida. Tried the first bottle last week. Just bought 4 more. No, we’re not alcholics, were just told who manufacturers it for the Kirkland label. Even though I prefer not to purchases items from this country, since it has the Kirkland label, I will do so.

Tastes smooth and too good.

Lynne

Hi Lynne! Thanks for the comment. Now I’m really getting curious. I’m going to be in NY in a week or so and (I can’t believe I’m saying this!) I may need to head to Brooklyn or Queens to check out the local warehouses!

Tried it at a tailgate party over the weekend. Very smooth and mixable. My brother in law says he paid $23 a bottle here in Phoenix for a 1.75. He has a a secret only I know, he refills his empty premium bottles of Belvedere, Stoli, and Grey Goose with it and so far nobody has figured it out yet.

Hi Joe!
Thanks for the tasting note (and the secret!). I’ve just realized it’s probably not available in NY so Phoenix in March might be might next opportunity to try it out…

Its my understanding that Kirkland Vodka is actually made from Grey Goose Vodka.

Hi Steven!
That could very well be. Costco’s MO for their Kirkland products is to find a premier producer to create their products. And since Kirkland Vodka is made in France that would be a logical connection.

Hello,
I have never posted on this site and I know none of you, but as I was researching the Kirkland vodka I stumbled upon your dialog. I work at a Costco in Northern California and I sell Wine and Spirits for my Wharehouse. I just wanted to let you all know that Grey Goose does not make Kirkland sugnature Vodka. Kirkland Vodka is made with water from the same spring in France as Grey Goose, but Grey Goose is in no way tied to our production of Kirkland Vodka. Costco contracts out to privite individual wine and spirit producers to make each batch original. And oh yes, the Vodka is very pure and smooth I would say it is tastier than the Goose, not that I am biast, haha! Enjoy.

Thanks, Keegan!

We’ve been drinking V since it arrive in Chicagoland Costcos. Just went to pick up a couple bottles for new years eve and they were all out. I went to the manager and asked what was up and he said Kirkland Vodka is no more per the info in the Costco mainframe computer. Sad. So I grabbed a 1.75 Grey Goose for $50, V was just over $30 here. We hadn’t used GG in a while so I mixed up two cosmos, one with GG and one with V and presented them to my wife as a blind taste test. She identified them correctly and I have the say the GG tastes better. But is GG $20 better? Hopefully Keegan can shed some light on what happened to V.

Wow, Norman! That seems so fast. I wonder if it’s just out of the queue for a while until they can refill the supply line. I’ve had that happen with their higher end olive oil. It won’t be in the store for months and even the managers can’t see an incoming order of any sort. After I’ve given up hope then suddenly it’s back on the shelves again.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed!

Most Costco’s in the Chicago still have an ample supply. Purchased my first bottle today and will go back tomorrow and stock up. As good or better than Grey Goose.

BTY, if you like red wine, try the Kirkland Cabernet. @17.95 it beats every 40.00 cab I have tasted.

Mike: Thanks for both comments. So perhaps the news of the Kirkland Vodka’s demise was just a rumor.

And good to hear about the wine! I have a bottle of something - can’t quite remember what I finally chose - that I’ve been wanting to check out. Sounds like I might be in for a treat!

I have been drinking Grey goose for years. I have seen Kirkland products go in and out for years. I stocked up 18 bottles. My blind taste tests have confirmed and I was told directly from my Costco managers that it is in fact produced by Grey Goose. Currently the stuff is out of the computers so as far as they know its done.

Type your comment here. Just bought the Kirkland’s vodka in FL. My favorite vodka is Grey Goose. This one is very clean but does not taste the same as GG. For the money, it’s great!

I just bought a bottle of Kirkland Vodka today in San Mateo CA store. They have plenty, so hopefully its not discontinued. Reading all your posts is very interesting

Thanks for the update, Lee. Hopefully the rumors of it being discontinued were just rumors or maybe a little gap in the supply not a total end of production.

I just returned from the Costco in San Luis Obispo, Cal. When I put my bottle of Grey Goose on the counter to purchase, two employees confirmed to me that V and Grey Goose were indeed the same vodka. One told me a story on how one customer transfers the V into a GG bottle, and no one has noticed.

I’m trying it tonight….

My wife and I tried the Kirkland Vodka AND the Grey Goose, straight, room temperature, with a water rinse between tastes. Grey Goose wins hands down! Smooth, no burn. Kirkland vodka burns compared to the Goose. There IS a reason that Goose costs $18.00 more. You get what you pay for. If they are both made from French Wheat, distilled in France, then why so much difference? Apparently the champagne limestone really does make a difference!

its the best!i am a very serious drinker mostly kettel 1

So Lynne, do you call them “freedom fries” too?

The Georgia Costco’s don’t sell the Kirkland Vodka or I just haven’t been able to find it. Does anyone know who a distributor is or where else I could find it?

I just returned from COSTCO where I priced some spirits for a Long Island Iced Tea. I’m very new at this so I Googled the subject. After seeming the Kirkland branded Vodka I Googled again and here I am.
I hope to start making some nice drinks for myself but for now, how of these Vodkas rated? IOW, in which order of goodness would you sort them?
Kirkland
Absolut
Ketel One
Grey Goose

Okay wait….Just for the heck of it I bought a bottle of Kirkland vodka and a bottle of Grey Goose, both from France. After inspecting the labels (both using Gensac Springs water)from and doing a blind taste test…..could it be possible Kirkland Vodka and GG are the same…..do a test yourself….you be the judge….WOW!!!

I’ve had several bottles of the Kirkland vodka and am completely satisfied, and in fact prefer it to GG. That said, in my mind, (read taste buds), it still has a ways to go to overcome some of the other top notch vodkas, but it’s hard to beat the price. While I prefer the potato vodkas, Chopin and Glacier in particular, I have found a very sound competitor in Gvori. It’s a Polish grain vodka and is about $5.00-8.00 less than the Kirkland.

[…] move over Grey Goose Kirklands in town - 5 times distilled!!! The Spirit World - » Kirkland Vodka smoooooth __________________ […]

Kirkland vodka is made by Greygoose. I love the taste and in the morning i have headachs, “depending on how much i drink.” The only con is the bottle is massive. Makes it tough to pour. But then again for $30 i would lift a truck

I have heard that only distinguished producers have access to that Gensac Spring. While I haven’t had the opportunity to try the Kirkland vodka, I’m sure it is a fine product. In fact, I have always been pleased with products from that area. I recently returned from a trip to France and tried another vodka made from Gensac water called Dragon Bleu Vodka. Does anybody know if it’s available in the US?

I absolutely agree that Kirkland is the best mix of the price and quality. Yesterday I provided Kirkland in the bottle of GG to my friends (they all Russians and drink straight shots). None of them was suspicious about my fraud. It is smooth, has a good taste, doesn’t smell like cheap vodkas. I bought it in Costco for $32 or $34 dollars per 1.75L. So, it is less than $15 per 0.75L. I have to pay $27 for GG to get the same size bottle.
P.S. if you are vodka drinker try Kristiania. This is Norwegian potato vodka, amazingly smooth and tasteless, little cheaper than GG but more expensive that Level.

Kirkland is not made by Grey Goose. I work for Goose and we have no affiliation with Kirkland. Goode is owned by Bacardi USA.

From what i hear, when Bacardi bought gray goose, they moved operations for the distillery. The distillery that used to make gray goose is the one making this vodka. This is just what i hear from a somewhat credible source. I suspect if its the case you can find it on google. It (kirkland) is exceptional.

if you are looking for other interesting brands, try pinnacle if you can get it.
Its an amazing vodka and only 20 bucks for a 1.75. Availability isnt so good though from what i see on the web.
Check out the info on epinions, if you can find this one its worth the try.
