And for that matter, where can one find the recipe for Boker's? I could have sworn I'd seen in before, but Google is not forthcoming with it today.

Hi Michael. Nice blog ya got there!

Robert, I wonder if you could comment on the merits and applications of Boker's bitters? That's one I haven't encountered yet (or tried to make at home).

I've got my wee small supply of Abbott's, a largish bottle that came 3/4 full. I don't see /any/ of that on eBay anymore.

Sorry Thomas (and Robert), but my blogging platform does that programatically. There are some good cocktail blogs out there right now, and Cocktail Chronicles is one of the best, so I'm happy I could point you that way.

Thomas... chances are good your searches for Abbott's bitters recipe will come to a dead end. We've all tried :->

I am however getting close to a reproduction. I had a Gas Chromatograph done of an unopened bottle that I have (I actually have several :-) and we've gotten a pretty good list of ingredients. One of which unfortunately is "Tonka Bean" which isn't allowed as a food product by the FDA due to it's blood-thinning attributes. But I'm working with some chemists to try to arrive at some viable approximations flavor-wise and hope to have something close "soon".

In the meantime, if you happen to find yourself in New York, drop by the Pegu Club. I personally mix up a custom bitters for them which is the result of my original attempt to "approximate" the flavor profile of Abbott's bitters. Close, but not quite there.

One of my favorite bar topics! I actually spent some time a few years ago trying to unearth the Abbott's recipe. And if I get to Baltimore again for any length of time, I'll try again.
Thanks in particular for the links to the orange bitters brands. There seems to be a small bitters renaissance afoot.
