Happy Hour at Home Holiday
This weekend I will be celebrating the holiday with my family. Yes it’s still a week until Christmas but years ago we started this tradition of gathering the weekend before Christmas to celebrate. That way no one has to travel on the holiday (we are spread out over a 300+ mile stretch along I-5 in Oregon and Washington), there is no negotiating with in-laws (or outlaws as the case may be) and each family can then spend Christmas in their own homes creating their own traditions.
I was really happy to see Robert’s post on Tom and Jerry for Mixology Monday as that is what I will be drinking this weekend, which you may know if you read yesterday’s mile-long post. However, this is one of those things that my Dad makes every year but there is no recipe, no measuring, he just makes them and they turn out the same every year. Our version is slightly different but not enough to worry about. I’d say the biggest thing is that we use bourbon instead of rum as the spirit.
On our “Christmas Eve” we will have the traditional lasagne dinner, clean up the kitchen, then make up the Tom and Jerrys and bring out a platter of cookies. We’ll then gather around the tree to exchange gifts. Over the years the number of gifts has dwindled. My siblings and I all draw names and this year the next generation, the cousins, are doing that, too. So gathering around the tree is more about getting us all in one place as a family than anything else. And it’s the little traditions that make those times memorable.
So take a look at that giant list from yesterday, pick out a drink that can become your family tradition and have a wonderful weekend.
