Holiday Traditions - New and Old

Editors Note: Today’s post comes to us from a guest writer, Curt McAdams who writes for our sister blogs, Get Your Grill On and Wine Sediments. His version of Egg Nog is not only wrapped in tradition but also varies from Thomas’ version we posted a couple weeks ago. That is the great thing about so many cocktails - you can really make them your own based on your history, traditions and preferences.
I recently (3 1/2 years ago) got married for the first time, and my wife and I have begun our own traditions during this season. When we were engaged, my wife knew that I was a big fan of the Claymation show Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, so she bought every Rudolph ornament she could find. That’s continued every year since, and now we have LOTS of Rudolph stuff!
One of our traditions mixes the new Rudolph decorations with an older tradition from when I would decorate the tree with my family…having homemade eggnog while decorating. I don’t fix this any other time, but homemade eggnog is soooo much better than that store bought concoction that’s everywhere this time of year.
Eggnog Recipe
- 2 whole, fresh eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup ice cream (or more if you want)
- 1/8 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 tbsp turbinado sugar
- Rum to taste
- Freshly ground nutmeg
In a blender, blend the eggs, milk, ice cream, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar and rum until smooth.
Pour into Rudolph and Clarice mugs and top with freshly grated nutmeg.
Enjoy while trimming the tree!
(And any guys out there that don’t like decorating the tree… participate in this with your family. You’ll be surprised how much it means to them!)
Traditions can be new or generations old. This year, celebrate your family traditions with fervor and love. And if you don’t have family traditions, start making your own!
