Cocktails on the Fly
For anyone who has ever wondered how to make a White Russian salute, a Mint Julep take notice or a Tom Collins respect you in the morning, look no further. Cocktails on the Fly (http://www.cocktailsonthefly.tv/) debuts as a virtual salon, catering to viewers interested in bringing the same level of creativity to their cocktails as they do to their cooking.
The show, which is presented by ON Networks (http://www.onnetworks.com/), gives viewers the opportunity to learn at the feet of the engaging, quirky hostess Alberta Straub, who literally lives in the world of mixed drinks. Dubbed the “Alice Waters of Booze,” by SF Weekly, Straub has made a name for herself, nationwide, as a libations innovator, mixing cocktails in Bay Area watering holes for years, using only fresh produce and homemade ingredients.
Now the self-monikered, “Miss Flighty” (named for her fascination with 1960s jet-age culture) is bringing her unique and highly-regarded repertoire to the masses for the first time, by way of Cocktails on the Fly. Shot in a Bay Area kitchen and presented in short, 3-10 minute segments, the show has something for everyone - from drink enthusiasts to aperitif aficionados.
One recent episode features Straub teaching viewers how to make a “Playboy Bourbon Cooler,” a cocktail recipe she unearthed from a 1968 Playboy magazine article entitled, “How to Drink All Day.” That recipe, which Miss Flighty walks viewers through in her own inimitable way, is prepared as follows:
BOURBON COOLER
Juice half a lime
Match with Simple Syrup
Add 1.5oz of Bourbon
Add Orange Slices
Muddle!
Add 2 Slices of Ginger
Add 1.5oz of Jamaica
Add a Cucumber Peel Garnish
Add Cracked Ice & Stir
Add Ginger Beer & Splash of Bitters
Straub also offers up her own variation on the drink, called a “Pompous Playboy,” which is prepared using pomegranate juice and fresh orange slices.
