This week is vacation for me, at the beach. I had a chance to try out several of the drinks from Surfin' Safari (as well as the Fog Cutter from these pages) on my extended family. The Zombie (1956) was the runaway favorite. This is a "wow" drink at many levels. It just tastes good, but with layers of flavors. Truly a culinary cocktail. And the zombification effect is altogether pleasant.
Beachbum Berry is a saint among cocktailians and his Surfin' Safari an essential part of the Canon of cocktail culture.

Excellent! I just finished reading /Sippin' Safari/ myself. I think it is a classic of cocktail history right out of the gate. His chapter on the Zombie (three different "authentic" recipes!) was probably my favorite.

There's an excellent thread in the Tiki Central forums about the efforts of the Bum, Stephen Remsberg, and Wayne Curtis to recreate the 1934 Zombie in Sippin' Safari using the actual vintage rums called for in the recipe.
