I'll be happy enough when the liquor stores in Jersey start carrying more than Jim Beam, let alone bars. The only two places I've ever found rye for my Manhattan is Mortons and McCormick and Schmick. Hopefully change is on the horizon.

ND,

In both Scotland and Ireland, they have the notion of "grain whisky", which is whiskey made from grain other than barley.

Most blended whiskies are made by the addition of non-barley whiskies, in fact there has been a slight controversy recently in Scotland as to what to call a blended whiskey which is made from "only" malted barley. Different distilleries had been using different names, but the name that appears to now be the approved name is "Blended Malt Scotch Whisky".

If the whiskey doesn't have "malt" in the name, then it almost certainly includes grains besides malted barley (in some cases unmalted barley).

And, to correct Ian's statement, blended scotch is made by blending different (barley only) malt whiskies, not by blending different grains.

I have to disagree with Thomas's comment on scotch whisky—scotch is always made with malted barley only, and as far as I know this is regulated by law in both Scotland and Ireland.

[...] To celebrate Repeal Day I’ve decided to return to a cocktail I have already talked about before that was popular prior to prohibition. A cocktail that for me sums up the elegance of pre-prohibition cocktails and the obsession late-nineteenth century bartenders had with vermouth. It also traditionally uses Rye, a whiskey that was very popular pre-prohibition but overtaken by Bourbon after the 18th amendment was repealed, for reasons Robert explains here. I am of course talking about the Manhattan cocktail… [...]

1. Black Maple Hill 18 and 23 - the best. 18 has more spice - 23 is smoother.
2. Thomas Handy Sazerac - hot and spicy, delicious.
3. Vintage Rye 21 - similar to the BMH, nearly on par. Handy wins for variety.

Hirsch Selection 22 is very good, but not on par with these other ryes. Old Portrero 18th Century style is very strongly bitter, though many report seriously enjoying it. My one bottle has not seen too much action, while others are slowly drained. Rittenhouse Bottled in Bond and Sazerac Rye are both good pours, but I find them less interesting than their more aged relatives.

Still looking for Pappy Van Winkle - as all of the Van Winkle products I've been able to try are excellent.

But for Rye, BMH and Handy Sazerac are my reigning champs.

Another sweet, slightly related whiskey I find immensely enjoyable is the Bernheim Wheat Whiskey. A very easy, smooth, (really flawless) whiskey. Different, and a huge success.

People are right to get excited about Ryes. They're much more lively than other types of whiskey, and can be spectacular, as the brands listed here attest.

Ah, good point, Ed! Hirsch Rye is lovely. In fact, anything they make is lovely, in my experience.
