“Tales of the Cocktail” Spirit Awards nominees for 2008

Tales of the CocktailTales of the Cocktail is an annual gathering of spirit and cocktail experts in New Orleans, which is now in it’s sixth year. In addition to the regular sessions, seminars, panels, tastings, as well as general partying, last year they added a new element, the “Spirit Awards” to identify and recognize significant achiements and efforts in various categories. The award process is overseen by Simon Difford, publisher of the popular “Diffords Guides”, as well as the annual recipe tome “Cocktails“, which is now up to “#7″.

At this years Tales of the Cocktail (July 16-20) they will be announcing the winners for the following categories:

Best Drink Selection
A venue stocking an outstanding range of spirits and liqueurs. The judges will favor discernment as well as sheer numbers of bottles stocked.

Best Classic Cocktail Bar

World’s Best Cocktail Bar
This award recognizes the international influence on cocktail trends and seeks to award the world’s best cocktail bar.

Best New Cocktail Bar
Only bars which have opened in the 18 months preceding the awards may be nominated. This award aims to reward new creativity and ideas as well as well executed drinks.

Best New Cocktail/Bartending Book
The best book published in 2007 regarding cocktails, liquor, bars, bar design or bartending in general. New editions of existing works published in 2007 may also be nominated.

Best New Product
This is awarded to what the judges consider to be the best new cocktail ingredient (spirit, liqueur, syrup or juice) or piece of cocktail equipment (muddler, shaker etc.). To qualify products must be on general retail sale in at least three US states.

The judges seek to reward innovative and thirst inducing cocktail menus. Both the design and content will be considered.

Dear me, Robert, how is that we in Seattle have been shut out of the nominations? Apparently we of the Pacific NW will be easily identifiable at this year’s Tales…just look for the ones with the chips on their shoulders!

Thank you for posting these. I’ve been very curious about it since hearing they had been released.

Dear Robert,
Why is the West Coast and all it’s talent being ignored? What is the process to gain a nomination? I am greatly disappointed to see so few of the leading West Coast mixologists up for nomination!
I am glad to see who is up for nomination (props) but I think there are quite a few fabulous mixologists and bars who have been left out.

Last year Seattle was all over this list, with the Zig Zag cafe taking “Best Drinks Selection”, and “Best Classic Bar”, along with various nominations scattered throughout. And the West Coast is represented this year again, with nominations from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Nomination forms were sent out to all participating presenters, sponsors, as well as sent out to a long list of folks throughout the industry. This set of nominations was whittled down from a much larger list of candidates.

Speaking of Zig Zag, I remember last year they were unsure if they’d be able to make it to Tales, and being nominated helped convince them they should. I hope the same happens with some of those nominated this year, particularly those from overseas. I’d love the chance to meet the proprietor of a world-class bar from Belfast!

Dear Committee,
unfortunately I have to agree with several of the others that felt neglected. What about Tokyo, Germany, Spain, not to mention several NYC mixologists who have been revolutionizing cocktail menus around the world. Shingu, Alex O , Junior, etc. Those who do not neccessarily have the time or schedule to attend or are buddies? Its a serious profession. These guys are the traveling ambassadors for us.. Some of New Yorks Finest are not event mentioned…Cmon guys, if you are giving out prices, make sure the whole world is included in the world’s best, not only the insider family..!!! thanks
